Assignment 2 - Justin Zhu

Books and reading, definitely not my forte. I'll be completely honest, the only books I've read in the last year were for school, and those were The Teenage Brain, The Great Gatsby, and The Joy Luck Club. I know this says a lot about my character, but I'm just not a fan of literature. Concerning The Teenage Brain though, I honestly enjoyed reading it because I could relate a bunch of Psychology that I learned Sophomore year and it was cool to see some terms concerning neurotransmitters used in a book like that and relating the development of the brain to myself. Honestly The Great Gatsby was a very annoying read for me. I just don't like the types of characters that Gatsby, Daisy and Tom were, which makes sense considering they were made to seemingly mock the rich upper class. Either way, reading that book just made me mad. On the other hand, The Joy Luck Club hit a lot closer to home. As someone who's also from Chinese descent, I really started to wonder about the origins of my parents and how they grew up, and what really inspired them to come to the states. While their motivations and the ones shown in The Joy Luck Club were different, I still respect them for taking their own risks to make me who I am today.
