Assignment #6: Metal Straws are as Hollow as... Metal Straws- Kelly Landry

Metal straws. A new trend and a pathetic excuse for “environmental protection.” Recently, people— blinded by the overwhelming desire to be trendy— have started campaigns and made legislature against the use of plastic straws. Coffee shops use paper straws; Starbucks, the largest coffee company in the world, has even redesigned their cups’ lids to not require a straw, however, the new lids require more plastic than the older version of lids and straws combined. Yes, it is crucial to protect the earth’s resources and ensure that the environments we inhabit are not only clean, but sustainably managed. However, this mission will not be accomplished by VSCO girls (girls with scrunchies on their wrists who sip kombucha out of their hydroflasks) and adult sippy cups. This goal will be accomplished by continuous action, frugality and conscientiousness. This starts with bringing back the recycling of paper right here in Kentucky. This starts with making the effort to actively use less resources, reduce the craze of consumerism.
