Assignment 13 - Elizabeth Moore - Black November: the New and Improved Black Friday!
Why confine giving thanks for life’s blessings
to Thanksgiving Day? This year, millions of Americans are excited to extend the
spirit of the holiday to include Black Friday, when they will give thanks for
the imported plastic products purchased on sale across the nation. Retail
workers report that since Americans are clinging to the values of generosity
and thankfulness inspired by Thanksgiving for an extra day this year, Black
Friday was busy, but strangely civil. Lucinda Woods, a cashier at Best Buy
reported proudly that “This year, there were no shopper mobs tackling each
other to grab the last iPhone in-stock. They merely stepped aside, allowed the shopper
who picked up the item first to purchase it, and seemed thankful for the items
they did arrive in time to purchase.” Clearly, Black Friday now truly exhibits
the values taught by the Thanksgiving Holiday. Companies are now considering lengthening
Black Friday so that sales begin in October, in the hopes that discounts might
spread the spirit of Thanksgiving across the nation throughout the month of
November.
